Scriptures referenced: John 6:60-66.

1. Read John 6:63. Have you recently read part of God’s Word that filled you with Spirit and life and joy? Would you be willing to share that experience?

2. Implicit in Jesus’ teaching is that we greatly need His favor and direction, and He is happy to give that to us. But it requires that we rely upon His strength and wisdom rather than our own. How have you been relying upon your own strength more than God’s? Where could you use a little joy, encouragement and uplifting?

3. Ryan shared the idea of a “Stepford god,” which is a false god, one who never disagrees with us and always smiles and says yes. But because God loves us, His word disagrees with us at times to make us better, to heal us and to guide us. Can you share when a friend has lovingly disagreed with you, for your good? Has God’s Word recently done this for you? How so?

4. Part of knowing God and loving Him means we don’t follow Him only when it is convenient for us, but we follow Him because He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. He is our Creator and knows us better than we know ourselves. And to live according to His Word is live with the highest joy conceivable, even when it hurts. Have you experienced the joy of knowing God even when it hurt? How so?
